The Catawba County Chamber of Commerce held it's 6th. Annual Edison Project Finals at Market On Main. The 6th Annual Edison Project Entrepreneurial Competition is a celebration and recognition of the entrepreneurial spirit of the Greater Hickory Metro. After much deliberation over the record of applicants this year, we are proud to announce this year's winners, below. These entrepreneurs, who have an idea for an innovative, viable business in the Hickory Metro Area, vied for an economic incentive in the amount of $10,000 for 1st place, to: Foothills Digest - Carmen Eckard: This publication and website will speak to the history and tradition of the Foothills region of North Carolina. It will feature people and movements that are shaping our future. This magazine will highlight our culture and unique traits and be a cord that ties our community together. $5,000 for 2nd place went to: Apple Valley Orchard & Cidery - Justin Fox: Apple Valley Orchard & Cidery produces orchard-based ciders that represent this region of North Carolina and its apple heritage. The small batch ciders are made with locally grown fruit, supporting the development of our local foods market. And $3,000 for 3rd place, to: InPort - Jens Roessler, Tomas Hans & Sercan Cihan: InPort will help connect European student athletes with coaches from American universities to obtain athletic scholarships. Each player will have a detailed profile, and a sophisticated algorithm will assist coaches in finding the perfect fit for their university team.

The focus was on the question: "Should performance pay play more of a role in North Carolina teacher compensation?" NCIOPL Board Chair, Nelle Hotchkiss explained, "The goal of these events is to encourage and enhance education dialogue at a local level - equipping voters with information they can use to make more informed business, policy and electoral decisions." The Catawba County Chamber of Commerce held a "Ribbon Cutting" at the Grand Re-Opening of the Old Ridgeview Library. A group of community partners came together to revitalize the structure. The building will be used as a history center and meeting space. It has been designated an Historic Building. The building received interior and exterior renovations, ranging from windows to handicapped accessibility. The former library was opened in 1951 and remained for four decades. The current Ridgeview Library was opened nearby, in the late 1990's. The project is being partly funded through community development block grants and loans from the City and funds from the Interfaith Housing Development Corporation. The Hickory Sportsman's Club held it's gala spring black tie dinner with Carolina Panthers Head Coach "Riverboat" Ron Rivera as Guest Speaker at Rock Barn Country Club & Spa. Ron Rivera became the fourth coach in Carolina Panthers history on January 11, 2011. In six seasons, Rivera has guided the team to a Super Bowl appearance, and NFC Championship and three NFC South titles. He is a two-time Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award winner. In 2015, Rivera led the Panthers to the second Super Bowl appearance in team history following a franchise-best 15-1 record and their third consecutive NFC South championship. In the process, Carolina became the fourth team in the Super Bowl era to start a season 14-0, joining the 1972 Miami Dolphins, 2007 New England Patriots and 2009 Indianapolis Colts. Carolina's 18-game regular season winning streak was the longest in NFC history. The new CVMG (Catawba Valley Medical Group) facility will be the imprint for the future CVMG facilities. This granat was made possible through a Civil Money Penalty request through the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services in partnership with NC Coalition for Long Term Care Enhancement. The grant enhancements included a pond-less water feature, three waterfalls, full spectrum lighting, a retaining wall and various plants. Shining Hope Farms is a 501(c) (3) organization whose mission is to enable children and adults with disabilities to achieve functional goals through the use of equine assisted activities and Hippotherapy. Shining Hope Farms was founded in 2002 by Paul and Melinda Kirkpatrick in response to the needs in the community to provide therapeutic services in an enriching farm environment. The purpose of the farm's services is to improve the quality of life of the participants as well as their families. Shining Hope Farm's programs have been structured to serve individuals and groups with a variety of disabilities, such as Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Downs syndrome, developmental disabilities. brain injuries & hypotonia, to mention a few. Our clients find wellness, strength and hope on the back of a horse. We serve over 150 children and adults, weekly.
